Student Visa
With a student visa you can study for up to 5 years in Australia and work up to 40 hours on a fortnight rolling basis to finance your studies. However, you must attend at least 80% of the courses.
To qualify for this visa, you must have been accepted into an approved Australian educational institution, have an Australian health insurance for the duration of the stay, and have the necessary funds to support your needs for the duration of your studies.
The visa application costs A$620 for the primary applicant, A$460 for your partner and A$150 for any applicant under the age of 18.
A subsequent temporary application charge of A$700 might be applicable under certain circumstances (location when applying for the visa and previous visa held).
Health Insurance
To apply for a student visa, it is compulsory to prove that you have an Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) providing medical and hospital insurance in Australia. You need to make sure that it covers you and the family members on your visa for the full duration of the visa.
There is an exception for the following passport holders. You will not need OSHC if you are:
- a Norwegian student covered by the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme
- a Swedish student covered by Kammarkollegiet
- a Belgian student covered under the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia.
Only a limited number of Health insurance providers meet the OSHC criteria, we are partner's with 4 of the majors, please contact us for any quote request.
Bring your family with you
Add your loved ones on your visa
Your student visa allows you to add secondary applicants. The applicants must be part of your family unit: your partner, your children and your partner’s children. It is important to keep in mind that your partner will not have the same visa restrictions as you.
Your children will need to go to an Australian School, therefore you have to be aware of the potential costs. You might also need to pay for intensive English language course, depending on their English proficiency.
Working Rights
On a student visa, your partner is allowed to work up to 20 hours per week from the day your course starts. Keep in mind that as primary applicant you will be able to work full-time during school breaks and at the end of your course, but your partner’s working rights are always 20 hours per week.
If you study a Master or a Doctoral degree, your partner can work without restriction once your course has started and until the end of your visa.
School for your children
As an international student, you will be asked to pay overseas tuition fees for your children, and it can be very expensive.
Master and Doctoral degree students benefit from an overseas tuition fees waiver for their dependent children during the full-time enrolment period. This means that they will only be asked to pay for overseas tuition fees before the beginning of their course and once it finishes.
If your children need support in English, the Australian Education system offers 2 intensive English language courses. Depending on their English proficiency, you will need to pay between $1,500 and $3,000 per child per year.
